17 Best Formula Milk for Baby 0-6 months for 2023: Price and Reviews

Best Infant Formula USA 2023

milk powder for babies

If you are looking for the best formula milk for your baby who is from 0 to 6 months old, you've come to the right place. Breastmilk is nature's perfect baby food. But if you can’t breastfeed, or if you’ve chosen not to, formula milk is the next best thing. Scientists and medical experts have spent years developing high-quality formula milks that will provide your baby with the nutrition he/she needs.

When you’re deciding which is the best milk powder for your baby, you will need to take several factors into consideration. Think about her health and dietary needs, her age, and the cost and preparation time of different formula milks.

As a summary, there are three different types of formula:
  • cow’s milk-based formula
  • hydrolysed protein formula
  • soya-based formula
It’s most likely your baby can have cow’s milk-based formula, unless there’s a health or dietary reason why she can’t.

There are many different brands for baby or infant milk formulas in USA. We have trawled through the reviews, Google search results, Amazon Best Sellers and milk powder comparison information available on blogs and forums, and shortlisted the best for you.

Update: Many of the infant formula products are out of stock on Amazon. You may wish to keep your options open to multiple online and offline channels or visit the site regularly to check whether the items are back in stock.

These are the best for when you are traveling or even just out and about. They make feeding on the go easy and certainly less messy. We always make sure our diaper bag has plenty. We have had many parents ask us where we purchased these because they were just amazed at the convenience. Even my mother stated that she wished they had something like this when she was raising me and my siblings. This is a must have for all parents who are formula feeding their children.

3. Bubs Organic Grass Fed Infant Formula Stage 1

If you want to feed your baby a formula made from organic ingredients, consider Bubs Organic Grass Fed Infant Formula Stage 1. Organic formulas use ingredients extracted from USDA-certified organic milk and other food products, but they may contain synthetic ingredients that are not approved by the National Organic Standards Board.

Aussie Bubs formula is manufactured in Australia. The company's formulas are Clean Label Project certified, which means they are tested for chemicals of concern, including heavy metals, pesticide residues, and plasticizers. Aussie Bubs came to the US during the formula shortage of 2022, but a company spokesperson says the brand is here to stay.

This organic formula is made from grass-fed whole cow’s milk. Whole milk formula has only been available in the US in the last year, and it naturally contains the potentially beneficial ingredient milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), an ingredient our store-brand picks do not contain.

In addition to grass-fed whole milk, the protein comes from organic whey, and organic nonfat milk, making the whey-to-casein ratio 60 to 40). The carbohydrate is primarily in the form of lactose. This formula contains a prebiotic (galactooligosaccharides), and it contains soy oil but no palm oil.

The consistency of the powder is not as fine as most and seems more granule like, which dissolves super quick!!! No froth and no chunks left behind. I honestly don’t think the taste is superior to any other formula, it taste like… formula 😆 but my son had no issues adjusting.

He has been on it for almost a week now and his bowel movements are back to looking more like breastmilk poops. He is not straining and seems overall more happy! He still spits up a bit but that is slowly improving as long as we are careful to get his burps out.

This is one of the fewer formulas that my baby can have. No fussiness and great bowel movements.
The only reason I give it 4 starts is because it has corn syrup in it, I wish it didn’t have.

7. Aptamil Stage 1

Aptamil First Infant Milk Stage 1 is an imported milk-based formula from the parent company Danone that contains lactose as the primary carbohydrate.

It contains two probiotics (galactooligosaccharides and fructooligosaccharides), it does not contain palm or soy oil, and the protein comes from skimmed milk powder and whey powder.

Stage 1 can be used for babies 0 to 12 months. If you choose this formula, it’s important to note that the mixing instructions are different than most US formulas: mix one scoop of powder with one ounce of water (most US formulas are one scoop for two ounces of water).

It is packed with extra omega-3 nutrients. These are highly important for brain and immune system development, as are vitamins and minerals like DHA, vitamins C and D, and so on.

Make no mistake, this formula is designed from an effective European recipe without any corn syrup. In this way, this can be a great choice for those who want to give their babies the best start possible in terms of nutritional development.

It’s also free of palm oil, reducing the likelihood of any digestive or allergic reactions to the formula and its contents.

Before ordering LactoRelief I called Nature's One to inquire about the amount of lactose in it. They said it's less than 1%-that's a big difference! I ordered it right away & our son has been on it ever since. His remaining gastric issues cleared up almost immediately & he's now 3 months old & doing terrific. We'll keep using this formula until he no longer needs formula.

9. Bubs Goat Milk Infant Formula Stage 1

Goat’s milk is sometimes considered more similar to human milk than cow’s milk, because, like human milk, it contains A2 beta-casein protein. Most cow’s milk contains predominantly A1 beta-casein. (Some cows produce A2 beta-casein, and there are A2 cow’s milk formulas available.)

However, goat milk does contain some A1 beta-casein. And if your baby has a cow’s milk protein allergy, goat milk is not a good option because of the similar proteins in both kinds of milk.

Because this formula contains full cream goat milk, like our organic pick, it also contains natural milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), which may be beneficial. And like our organic pick, this formula contains less DHA than some cow’s milk formulas, at 8.8 mg.

The carbohydrates are primarily in the form of lactose. It has a prebiotic (galactooligosaccharides), it contains palm oil but no soy oil, and the protein is from whole goat milk and whey from goat’s milk (making the whey-to-casein ratio 60 to 40).

I recently switched my baby to BUBS the Goat Milk Formula after experiencing issues with a popular brand formula. The results have been truly remarkable. My baby was previously constipated, gassy, and fussy during feedings with the old formula. However, since transitioning to BUBs , my baby's discomfort has disappeared. She now has regular bowel movements, is no longer colicky, and seems much happier during feeding times.

One of the standout features of this formula is that it doesn't contain corn syrup, which gives me peace of mind knowing that my baby is getting high-quality, clean nutrition. The formula has been gentle on her sensitive tummy, and I can't express how relieved I am to have found a product that works so well for her. I highly recommend to other parents looking for an excellent alternative to traditional formulas. It's been a game-changer for us!

Enfamil Enspire is touted as the most similar milk formula to breast milk because it has Lactoferrin, unlike Neuro Pro. It contains hydrolysed milk proteins, making it easier to digest. Lactoferrin helps support the microbiome and prevents gastrointestinal infections. It is certified to be non-GMO.

It uses cow’s milk. It is also enriched with various plant-based ingredients to provide complete nutrition for your baby. However, since it contains cow’s milk and soy, it is not suitable for babies who are allergic to such ingredients.

Ingredients
Main ingredients : nonfat milk, whey protein-lipid concentrate, whey protein concentrate, lactose, and vegetable oil (which consists of coconut oil, soy oil, high oleic sunflower oil, and palm oil).

Sub Ingredients
Added vitamins and minerals, lactoferrin, polydextrose, galactooligosaccharides, crypthecodiniumcohnii oil, and mortierellaalpina oil.

Polydextrose is a soluble fiber that usually acts as a sweetener for sugar-free and diabetic recipes. Unlike sugar, polydextrose doesn’t significantly increase the caloric count of the infant formula.

Review
Adopted a newborn baby boy and this is the formula I decided to use because of the added "colostrum" type properties! As a farmer, we always use a colostrum type of formula at first for baby animals that don't get to nurse from mom. Didn't try this for our newborn until he was brought home at 4 days old, but he did excellent on it!

He was Jaundice and I felt he still could benefit from a formula with the colostrum type properties. No spitting up at all! And the gas he had from the hospital's Similac formula, totally stopped after a full day on the Enspire! He used up the entire container after 10 days... (big baby, big eater). He was also cleared of his Jaundice at his 1st checkup!

I switched him to the Enfamil Neuro-Pro Gentlease now that I don't feel the need for the extra "colostrum" benefit. He made the switch with ease and is now doing great on that too! But definitely a great 1st formula! I'm a foster mom and will definitely keep this on hand and use this with any newborn placements I get... as long as they don't have any specific dietary needs!!

My daughter was not tolerating ANY formula. After a trip to the emergency room, we found out that she has a milk allergy. The physician at the hospital told us to feed her soy formula! We saw our pediatrician the next day and she was appalled that the hospital doctor told us to feel her soy! She recommended a formula and even gave us samples. First two days were okay, after that, my daughter projectile vomited after every feed.

HiPP was recommended to us by a friend. I did a ton of research because I had never heard of it before. IT HAS CHANGED OUR LIVES!!! It doesn’t have the stench that every other formula we tried had, it has no odor! It is the only formula my daughter has tolerated and she loves it! THANK YOU!! Super fast shipping as well. THANK YOU!!!

Baby Nutrition Guide

1. 0-6 months

Newborns should either breast milk or infant formula on demand.

Breast Milk
For new-born babies, WHO advices to solely breastfeed for the first 6 months and then continue with additional nutritious foods up to 2 years old, based on you and your baby's needs. (Source)

Breastfeeding is usually the better option compared to formula milk because it..
- Adapts to the baby's changing requirements
- Provides babies with all of the vital nutrition and hydration they need
- Helps protect against infection and to build a healthy immune system
- Is a cheap and convenient to feed your babies wherever and whenever they need to.

Infant Formula Milk
In case breastfeeding doesn’t work or you choose not to breastfeed, infant formula is the only suitable alternative. It should be your baby’s only source of nutrition for the first 6 months. A formula-fed infant will drink every 3 - 4 hours and will increase as your baby grows.

According to NHS guidelines, cow’s milk and other substitutes should not be introduced as a main drink until after 1 year. Never start solids before 4 months. Source

Always seek medical advice before buying infant formula.

Water - NOT Recommended

It is recommended that you do not give babies under six months of age water. Until your little one is six months they should receive only breastmilk or formula.

Here are some of the common consequences of introducing water to babies too early..
- Lack of nutrients from milk or formula
- Slower weight gain and decreased development
- Weaker immunity
- Potential of reduced breast milk supply
- Water intoxication

For more information, check out When Can Babies Drink Water

4-6 Months Old
Most babies are ready to start solids around 5 - 6 months old.
Some signs that show they are ready include..
- Mastering the grabbing skill
- Developing head and neck control
- Losing the tongue-thrust mechanism that automatically pushes food out of their mouth. N

Aim to feed about 1-2 tablespoons of food twice a day to your baby. Solid food shouldn't replace milk as the main source of nutrients.

2. 6-12 months

At 6 months, parents will usually introduce more foods into their baby’s diet, so the amount of milk they will need will gradually decrease. For both formula-fed and breastfed babies, the amount of milk they drink should naturally adjust according to how much food they have eaten.

However, for babies 6 to 9 months old, most of their calories should still come from breast milk or formula. Don’t stress about getting them to eat bite after bite of solid food. Feed up to two meals daily (or once every couple of days for some babies), with each meal 2 to 4 tablespoons.

Suitable baby foods include iron-fortified single-grain baby cereal along with pureed vegetables, fruits, and meats. You can also try offering finger foods like cut vegetables, fruit, yogurt and cheese. However, try not to introduce more than one food at a time to identify possible allergies or digestive problems.

Water can be introduced in small amounts with meals. It is generally advised not to give your baby more than 100ml to 150ml a day. As they age, you may start introducing more water with the help of sippy cups and straws.

For a more detailed guide on introducing water to your baby, do check out When Can Babies Drink Water .

If they seem to have an endless appetite or don’t seem to be eating enough, contact your child specialist.

9-12 Months Old

At this age, about half of your baby’s calories may usually come from food and the other half from breast milk or formula.

Babies these age are usually interested in trying new foods, so you can try to give them small pieces of your own meals. If they want more, give them more, but if they push it away, maybe that item is just not their one of their favourites.

Babies like to play with their food, so you can try using yogurt, cheese or oats as a sauce for vegetables or whole-grain crackers. Just remember to cut the foods properly and to avoid hard pieces to prevent choking.

3. 12 months onwards

Summary : Feed breast milk, dairy milk (cow / goat / etc), alternative plant based milk (soy), more soft / semi solid foods. Seek medical advice before feeding non breast milk alternatives.

Children will usually start to eat larger, more regular meals and get most of their nutrition from foods other than milk. WHO recommends that babies continue to be breast fed up to 2 years and beyond, but they may begin to need less breast milk as they eat more food.

After 12 months, your baby may not need formula milk anymore as they can start drinking cow’s milk and other alternatives more regularly.

Below are some of the main types of milk that may be given at this stage.

Cow’s Milk - For children under 2, choose full-fat cow’s milk. Semi-skimmed doesn’t have the same nutrient profile in terms of vitamins and minerals and has less energy.

Goat’s / Sheep’s Milk - Their nutrient profiles are similar to cow’s milk so as long as they’re pasteurised, they’re alright to offer.

Soya Drinks & Other Milk Alternatives - As part of a healthy, balanced diet, soya, oat, almond and other vegetable based milks can be offered or used in cooking. However, they are usually not as nutritionally comparable to cow’s milk. Furthermore, not all brands fortify with the same nutrients.

2 years and above
Summary : Feed cow's milk or alternative, and a balanced diet. Formula milk as an addition if the child is not receiving enough nutrients.

Children will start to eat a more varied, balanced diet and may rely less on milk. You may adjust how much milk you give them based on their diet throughout the week. If your child's diet doesn’t include dairy, you should consider how you can replace any nutrients they might be missing out on, such as formula milk or alternative foods.

FAQ

1. Can I switch formula brands and if so, how do I ease the transition?

If you've been given free samples or have discount coupons for a brand of formula that's different from the one you've been feeding your baby, it's tempting to switch. In most cases, it's fine to change formulas provided you stick with the same type. For instance, the ingredients in all cows' milk-based, iron-fortified infant formulas (recommend for most babies) are essentially the same. The taste may vary slightly and your baby may balk when you switch, but you won't harm her by changing brands.

Likewise, if your baby is on a pediatrician-recommended soy-based, iron-fortified formula, switching to a different brand of soy-based, iron-fortified formula won't harm her. But if your baby is on a special type of formula, such as a hydrolysate formula, or you're considering switching formula types, check with your pediatrician first.

You may be worried that switching formulas will upset your baby's stomach, but that's unlikely. All babies have gas – a lot of gas – so gas alone doesn't mean your baby is unable to tolerate whatever kind of formula you're giving her. Nor is it a sign of trouble if your baby's bowel habits change in other ways, such as frequency or color. If her stool suddenly becomes very firm, she may be constipated, in which case you should tell your pediatrician (Don't assume the constipation is due to iron-fortified formula and switch to a low-iron formula. Studies show that iron doesn't cause constipation or any other digestive upsets.) If there's blood in your baby's stool or she's vomiting and there's blood in the vomit, call your baby's doctor as soon as possible. These are signs of a true formula intolerance.

According to a baby specialist, switching from cows' milk-based formula to a soy-based formula without consulting with your pediatrician first, is not recommended. If you have a conversation with your child's doctor about the pros and cons of cows' milk formula versus soy, you'll then be able to make an informed decision together. Some parents worry that excessive gas or other bowel oddities indicate an allergy to cows' milk, but true cows' milk allergies are extremely rare. Incidentally, many children who are allergic to cows' milk-based formulas are also allergic to soy-based formulas, so they're not a cure-all.

2. How do I know if my baby needs hypoallergenic formula?

Here are 6 signs your baby might need hypoallergenic formula.

a. Extreme Irritability
If your baby cries for long periods of time, it may be a good idea to discuss this with your doctor. He can evaluate your baby further and help diagnose a cow’s milk allergy. In this case, switching to a hypoallergenic baby formula may help your baby’s symptoms.

b. Family History of Food Allergies
If you or a member of your family has a history of food allergies, your baby is more likely to have one as well. An extensive French study done in 2019 showed a strong genetic link in cow’s milk protein allergies (CMPA).

c. Constant diarrhea / vomiting

d. Your baby has acid reflux (GERD)
Acid reflux is what happens when stomach contents and acid flow back up into the throat. This is a common problem in infants, especially those below 3 months old. Hypoallergenic formula may help reduce the symptoms.

e. Eczema
Your baby’s skin is sensitive, which can make it difficult to tell the difference between dry skin and eczema. Eczema is extreme dry skin that is red, inflamed, itchy, and often cracked. Babies with eczema are more likely to develop food allergies and oftentimes will develop skin symptoms before other food allergy symptoms appear. (Source)

f. Respiratory Issues
If your baby is wheezing or experiencing other respiratory issues, your baby may need immediate medical attention. See a doctor as quickly as possible.

Above all, if you're unsure, best consult a doctor for determining the best formula for your baby.

3. Pediasure for 0 to 6 months?

PediaSure products are not intended for infants younger than 1 year of age. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, infants under a year old should be breastfed or fed an iron-fortified infant formula.
